My Favorite Quilt Blog Hop

I have been doing some type of embroidery or needlepoint since I was a little girl. Any block that I can incorporate some type of embroidery is my favorite. Imagine my excitement when I came across the Block of the Month at the Hive Quilt Shop in Vista, CA. It not only includes embroidery, but applique and the lovely Dresden! I was in bee heaven! I had bought the Perfect Circles years ago and I am finally able to use them. The largest circle I had to use freezer paper and am glad that I used three layers. Much easier to iron down the edge of the fabric. Was confused on how to use the Perfect Circles when I first bought them. Similar to making yoyo’s. You just pull the basting thread to fit snugly around the circle and carefully press the edge down.
Press the edge with the tip of the iron (a few seconds),
just long enough to crease the fabric.
Remove the Perfect Circle
before you press the whole circle
with the hot iron to get a nice sharp edge.
If you leave it in, you will have a hot, melted piece of plastic!
Block 2
Block 1
I just plain ran out of time to finish the blocks. I still need to add the bee’s.

My husband got his left knee replaced on August 12th and was doing great. Was walking without a cane within two weeks. Everything went south when he developed a staph infection in the knee joint over the Labor Day Weekend. Had to go back into surgery to clean the infected area and now we are dealing with three visiting nurses (infusion nurse for the IV, nurse for the wound vac and a physical therapist) and on top of every thing else, I had to learn how to change his IV, which is changed every 24 hours. I am also busy running our business, cleaning the house, cooking, etc. I am just plumb worn out. I am praying that the antibiotic’s do their job and that we won’t have to go in for another surgery to remove the new knee parts, install a block and then he'll be put in a cast. Please send good thoughts and prayers our way.

I have been enjoying visiting all the quilters that are in the “My Favorite Quilt Block” Blog Hop. A happy diversion to be sure! So much talent.  Be sure to visit the rest of the participants blog’s today.

Many thanks to Carla for doing an awesome job of hosting this blog hop.

For those of you that made it this far, leave a comment on what you do when you see a bee. and where do you live? So much fun to see where every one lives.  I've been known to run to the next county in record time when I see a bee! I received two Block Two's (flower with bee). I stopped by the shop to return it and they told me to keep it, as it was their error. I asked if they minded if I shared it with a fellow quilter on this blog hop. They thought that was a cool idea. We will pick a winner on the 20th and will post winning comment on this blog. So check back on the 20th. Maybe I'll have the little bee's appliqued on the blocks by then.

Have a wonderful day!!

    2. Circles are definitely a challenge. I tried doing the fusible method and did not like it. This method allows you to end up with crisp edges.

  3. Thanks for the circle tips! I smile when I see bees; they're so necessary for a healthy ecosystem. Hornets, on the other hand, send me scurrying!

    1. Got stung by a bee when I stepped on it (imagine that!) when I was a child. And yes, we need our bees to pollinate our veggies and flowers. We have yellow jackets out here, nasty little critters!

  4. I love your block! When I see a bee, I stay far away. I'm allergic to their stings.

    1. My son-in-law is also allergic to bees. Got stung, drove himself to the ER. Threw his car keys and wallet at the nurse and passed out at the check in desk. Poor guy! He's ok, but has to carry one of those epi pens with him at all times.

  5. Hugs and prayers for you and your hubby, Heide. Bless your heart and your crazy life right now. Thank you for the circle tutorial and your lovely blocks. I love the circle process, they are so hard for me. I'm in Dodge City, Kansas and we have bees everywhere here in the sticks. They work in the garden right along side of me. What I run from is wasps... lol

  6. Your sunflower block is adorable. Staph is a nasty little thing and I am sending good vibes and prayers his way. Bee's, living in the country we encounter many flying insects. While I'm not happy about the bees I usually just shoo them away. Spiders are another story. I live in So Illinois.

    1. Thank you. Rec'd the third block and it is a bee hive. Can't wait to get that one started. Patience is the word of the day around here with that staph infection. Poor hubby has cabin fever. Spiders have their place outside, but let me find one in the house, they are history!

  7. I love that flower...so sweet and cute! Sounds like you need lots of prayers and hugs so I'm sending them your way. Positive thoughts, too! I'm in Washington, Utah, and we have lots of bees. When I'm feeling brave, I enjoy trying to get close up photos of them.

    1. You can just imagine the shock when this happened. We sailed through with no problems on his right knee. So many reasons as to why the left knee had issues. One of them being the rejection due to the first implant. Huh? Scratching my head over that one. The human body is so complicated....so we really need to appreciate it when we are healthy.

  18. Sorry to hear about your hubby's knee problems! Been there with my dad and you're right about the wearing yourself out! I used to be very wary of yellow jackets, wasps and hornets but now I know they do not care for peppermint oil and I haven't been stung once this season. I live on a farm in Oregon's beautiful Willamette Valley.

  19. When I see a bee I get away as fast as I can. I am allergic but I would run away even if I weren't.

Praying for your husband right now And for you as I know it's hard on you.

I also like blocks in which I can incorporate embroidery or applique. I've also embroidered since I was a kid when my aunt got me an embroidery kit as a Christmas gift.

  20. Praying that all goes well with your husband. Nothing is ever simple anymore. Funny you should ask about bees. I was at Costco the other day, and walked past the food court drink area. There were a few bees having a party on the lemonade spicket! Guess they were thirsty, too.

  24. I need to find some of those Perfect Circle templates...they sound great for making circular appliques. I'm not fond of bees, but know how crucial they are to our environment. I usually just move out of their way or swish them away with my hand.

  25. Heidi, your blocks are great. I don't have those large circles, but she came and taught a class at our guild last year and I bought her other templates. She has some really great ideas to make applique easier! I hope your hubby improves and you will have strength to hold everything together! I was a home care nurse back in the day when we could visit patients every day or even up to three times a day if needed. Those days are long gone. Take care of yourself too.

  26. Hope your husband heals quickly. I look at bees and leave them alone, because we need them to pollinate flowers and veggies. Thanks for the info on the circles.

  31. Hope hubby is doing better! I like bees, but don't think they like me. I have never been stung by one (should I be knocking on wood now!). We don't see bees often here in Arizona but when we do I like watching them "work" because it's usually around beautiful flowers. Thanks for sharing your talent!

  34. Such fun blocks, thanks for managing to get them in, in spite of the current hand you are hold. So very sorry to hear about your husbands issues. Infection is not something one ever wants to think about. I've replaced 2 hips and a knee, thankfully without incident.

  35. Depending on the bee, I will stop yto take a picture! We get some fatty bumbles here in Walla Walla, WA that are so pretty, and occasionally visit my garden so I like to capture the moment.

The dresden sunflower is so pretty, and I had not seen the circle making kit before, that would be useful. Thanks for sharing!
